Struggling to see what the benefit(s) would be over say doing Zercher`s.

My guess is that they'll hit the quads hardest. With the weight so far back from the knees and close to your centre of gravity, back won't be doing much of the work. Think of a hack squat with the bar in front of you instead of behind. Zechers hit the back as they're held out in front of you in the crook of your arms. That's my guess.

agreed - I can't see any pro's. the cons being trying to put a weight onto the hip joint whilst in a squat. Unless the point of the exercise is to fuck the hip joint. In which case it's probably effective.
