Newbie to Training properly

Postby GeorgeOz » Tue Sep 20, 2011 8:38 pm

Hi there,

I've been going to the gym now for maybe 2 years on and off, just a cheap high street gym. I don't really have a set routine that i've stuck to as when asking for advice and researching the net on how to train I get told different things which confuses me. So I have basically just been doing my own thing... I don't think i've seen results.

I usually go 3 times a week and what I do is as follows:

Bench press > Deadlifts > Squats > Rows > Dips > Shoulder Press

After that I usually get on the cables and do bi's and tri's then work on abs for a bit to finish off.

I need to start training for the Paras 10 next year which is 10 Mile Military boot and 35lb bergan run!

My aim of training is to bulk up a bit more, and just be generally stronger all over.

I know in myself that I haven't been pushing myself to my limit everytime. I am getting more determined to push myself and see results!

If anyone has any advice or help for me would be much appreciated!

I'm joining New Spartan Gym soon to train in it looks very promising!

Cheers

Top man :supz: :prayer: =D>

I want to do that one as well. If all goes well I might have a go next year as well.

Nothing wrong with those. How many sets & reps are you doing?

I would go down & ask the owner about a free training session & a possible reduction for being a member on here ;-)

Yeah do it mate! I can't wait!

As for my sets and reps on the following...

Bench press > Deadlifts > Squats > Rows > Dips > Shoulder Press

I pretty much do the same sets / reps for each exercise - 3 sets of 12-16 reps

I've already had a word with the owner (Paul) I should be starting later this week / next week.

Cheers.

I think 3 sets of 8 rep or 5 sets of 5 reps would be more ideal. Paul will set you a whole new program up.

The para's 10 just looks like a beast of a race. Would take some planning & training for. A week this Sunday I'm down in Birmingham doing this race http://www.spartanrace.com/

we will get you training properly, luckily we have no cable machines so over training arms with silly exercises will be out until you deadlift at least 2 times your bodyweight

3x8 and 5x5 are both routines i advocate

Yeah, no point with the direct arm work. Your complex lifts will take care of them and allow you to concentrate your time and focus on exercises more suited for your goals. Cable machines? What are they?
You will be in good hands in the new spartan gym, just listen to the coach and stick to the plan he sets for you and go during the times he is not using his george foreman grill.
