Artificial Sweeteners

Postby Scott » Thu Oct 02, 2008 11:13 am

Ive been reading bits and peices where some people are saying that there may be the same or similar reaction within the body to artificial sweeteners as there would be to sugar. So basically your body will react much the same to you drinking a diet 'sugar-free' type fizzy drink as it would if you just drank, say, a regular 'get fat' can of coke.
As per usual of course there are as many people calling bullshit to this as there are claiming it ;-)

do artificial sweeteners effect the body in the same way sugar does, if so I guess it wouldnt be limited to drinks so any type of 'sugar free food would be the same?

http://www.medicinenet.com/artificial_s ... rticle.htm

Above is a link that I found on the internet that seems to have some good information about the various kinds of sweetners.

We were discussing this topic at the station the other day, especially the new theory that Spenda actually kills off productive bacteria in the interstinal tract, which makes you crave sweets. Splenda is produced using chlorine, which is what kills the bacteria.

The same can be said of highly chlorinated tap water.

In addition, artificial sweetners have been linked to migraines and other significant health issues. However, I don't know that amounts necessary to cause ill effect. I suppose occassional injestion of small amounts won't do too much harm.

Basically you still get an insulin spike with very sweet things.

Thats the short answer.

This is what I asked Tak a couple months back on the subject of artificial sweetners..

Have you ever come across the cephalic phase response with the use of aspartame and other type sweetners having a negative effect on insulin secretions and the metabolism of sugars?

I`m trying the get my head around the whole concept of sweetness being registered on the tongue and the body responding accordingly by *supposably* preparing the liver to accept new energy (food) from outside by stopping production of glucose from protein & starch/carb reserves.

If my thinking is correct (I hope) wouldn`t this then cause more of a *storgae* response (increased ciculating insulin) to store food when food is eventually eaten after somebody has had a diet drink containing a sweetner?

That's a very nice question.

This is one of the reasons why it's pointless KFC/MacDs/BK even do diet drinks.

In spain they sell beer with fast food instead

Mate was telling me other day that they even put aspartame into dry cider these days

The clue is in the name - 'Artificial' sweetner. Ranks right up there with margerine on things I'm not eating list!
